Michael Callahan Takes First Place at Potomac River

From Division 11, Maryland, October 31, 2009 Michael Callahan from Winchester, VA is one step closer to the 2010 ABA National Championship with a 1st Place win and 488.00 in the American Fishing Tour bass tournament held on Potomac River Lake this past weekend .  Michael’s 5 bass limit weighed in at 12.68 lbs. Second place went to Scott Randall with a weight of 8.91 lbs, third place was Charles King with a weight of 8.57. Big bass was awarded was to Michael Callahan for catching a 4.24 pound largemouth.

These anglers are acquiring valuable points to insure their birth in division’s two-day champion and the American Fishing Tour National Championship that will be held this fall.  Their points are also being used to determine the divisional angler of the year. The top angler by points earned in this division will represent the division in the Angler of the Year final round.

The top five anglers were:

1. Michael Callahan --12.68

2. Scott Randall – 8.91

3. Charles King – 8.57

4. Shawn Ezerski – 8.34

5. Chuck Hartzman – 8.27

Conditions: Instead of the mostly sunny, 70 degree weather we were promised by local weather forecasters, we were greeted with clouds, wind, 60 degree air all day long. A couple times during the day we got teased with a small patch of blue and that great fireball in the sky, but just a tease. Winning Strategy: Big fish came on spook around 7:30 from shallow grass (clear water) in bay close to the main river.  From 10:00 – 12:00 o’clock caught about 20 twelve inchers on various top waters and swim jigs in shallow grass (clear water) also in bay close to main river.  Finally at about 1:15 caught a 3.5lbr, 2.5lbr, and 2lbr in about 6 casts on lipless crankbait in dirtier water (1ft visibility) in a different (wind-blown) bay close to the main river. Next Divisional Tournament: This division’s next tournament will be April 18, 2010 on the Potomac River, launching out of Smallwood State Park.
